It will not be taken from the hero and the reward will not be given, the hero will just wave his hand. There exist a glitch such that the gold donated to the Temple won't register. This idea was influenced by the rogue-inspired game NetHack, but was cut from Fable during development. While spells like Heal Life would only be accessible to those who worshipped Avo. For example, an unused spell called Raise Dead would only be accessible to those who worshipped Skorm. According to co-creator Dene Carter, the original Fable was meant to have spells that would only be accessible to the player by worshipping to the right deity. It's assumed that praying may have also been considered. Attacking the Church Leader would have also resulted in your character going bald as a punishment. Other interesting things are that the Chuch Leader would have rewarded you for your devotion through granting you new abilities, giving you certain items or showering you with riches. Making the reward system more of a gamble. Unused dialogue for the Priests in the Temple imply that one of them is meant to be called the Church Leader and that he would have sometimes refused your offering if he didn't think you were worthy or if he didn't feel like doing so.But the cutscene was clearly never finished. There is an unused cutscene for the Temple of Avo that shows one of the priests praying on your behalf.Likewise, this same Trader allegedly built the Chapel of Skorm within the evil nexus of Darkwood for a similar profiteering motive. The Oracle cynically states that the ruthless Trader who discovered this location sensed an opportunity he invented Avo and constructed his Temple there, specifically to extract gold from those who felt the god's "power". The Snowspire Oracle in The Lost Chapters and Anniversary claims that Avo does not exist, and that Avo's Temple was simply built in a place where Will power was strong, tending towards good and healing those who stood there.Oddly enough, the acolytes there wear black robes instead of white. The Temple of Avo's early name was Temple of Light. In Fable II it is said that the temple was destroyed and replaced with the Temple of Light in Oakfield. There is also a quest related to this place called Temple of Light.
